Our Ngā Mātārae Programme Office are looking for a Principal Advisor, focusing on Māori Housing, to join the tima. You will be responsible for leading advice, services and support which enable the development of Māori housing and papakāinga on Māori and general land.


Priority for this role is overseeing and driving effective planning and delivery of Māori housing outcomes through the provision of specialist and technical advice, influencing across council policy and strategy. You will lead, identify, and support innovative solutions to known barriers impacting our customers by leveraging the knowledge resources skills and services of our internal and external stakeholders.


Day-to-day you can expect to:

  • Provide leadership on Māori housing and papakāinga development through the Māori housing unit and across the Auckland Council group
  • Engage in customer focused collaboration with central government and others in the housing sector to improve Māori housing opportunities
  • Provide leadership and knowledge of Auckland Council’s commitment to Māori outcomes including Māori housing/papakāinga
  • Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders including the Independent Māori Statutory Board.

He kōrero mōu: About you


We are looking for people with strong experience in relevant mahi and a strong degree of competency in and/or comfortable with te reo Māori me ōna tikanga. The role requires a tertiary degree qualification in a relevant field such as resource management, property, planning or urban development.


Ideally, you will have a good understanding and appreciation of the workings and function of local government and have an ability to work with and support elected members, senior staff, and executive members.


You will need specific experience with:

  • Working in the Māori housing/papakāinga development sector with a high level of understanding and knowledge of Māori housing and papakāinga development processes
  • Strong relationship building skills with mana whenua and mataawaka and Māori housing developers

You will champion upholding the Treaty of Waitangi and promoting Māori outcomes, as well as collaborating well across the CCO family.

Salary range $114,000 - $125,000 (dependent on experience)
